River flow is measured in cubic metres per second (m³/s). For floating between Thun and Bern, 100 m³/s is usually treated as the recommended minimum, but lower flow is not automatically a problem. It mostly means a slower trip and a bit more attention around shallow spots and obstacles.

• Below 100 m³/s: Usually still manageable, just slower and with shallower spots. Expect to pay more attention away from the banks because of obstacles and low-depth sections.
• 100–180 m³/s: Ideal range for first runs and for anyone who wants a more relaxed float. From mid-July onward, the Aare is often in this range.
• 180–230 m³/s: From around 180 m³/s the current increases significantly, so reaction times get short. Trees and hidden obstacles become more serious. This range is better suited to experienced riders with well-manoeuvrable boats, and inflatable toys are a bad idea.
• 230+ m³/s: The high-water threshold is exceeded. Above this level, only local experts with the right equipment should consider going out. Even professional rescue services are limited at these flows.

A recommended reference flow for this section is 150 m³/s. At that level, about 50 m³/s remains in the residual-flow stretch near the Felsenau plant, which is generally enough for swim-floats. In normal summer operation the plant diverts about 100 m³/s, which can be subtracted from the Bern-Schönau station to estimate the residual flow.

• Below 150 m³/s: Not necessarily a problem, but expect shallower sections in the residual-flow stretch and pay more attention to your line.
• 150–230 m³/s: Good boating conditions with enough water depth.
• 230–260 m³/s: The high-water threshold is exceeded. Experienced Aare riders can still handle it, but anyone unfamiliar with the section should scout lines and obstacles carefully beforehand.
• > 260 m³/s: Pronounced high water. Above this mark, the section is not recommended.
